15. Patients’ and Providers’ Perceptions Of Positive Health, Prevention, and Inter-Sectoral Collaboration in Dutch Healthcare

Background
Positive Health is an increasingly popular health concept that defines health not by the absence of illness, but rather by resilience in the face of physical, emotional and/or social difficulties. It is also reported to facilitate health promotion as it gives professionals a framework to discuss patients’ lifestyles and health goals. Because the six dimensions of Positive Health are interconnected and interdependent, its implementation requires active collaboration by healthcare professionals and a focus on integrated care. The Dutch health care system and the professionals within it are not yet prepared for this way of working, however. Following reports of mixed results regarding the implementation of Positive Health in the Netherlands, this study aims to investigate its implementation among primary healthcare professionals as well as potential barriers for its uptake.

Method
Data collection will include at least 24 semi-structured interviews with people from the general public (n=12) and primary health care professionals (n=12) in the South of the Netherlands. For members of the general public, themes of discussion will include: need for care on the six dimensions of Positive Health, receiving care on the six dimensions of Positive Health, receiving information related to lifestyle/prevention, experiences of collaboration between healthcare professionals. For healthcare professionals, themes of discussion will include: familiarity with Positive Health, implementation of Positive Health, collaboration with other healthcare professionals, implementation of prevention, participation in post-initial education programmes. Interviews will be transcribed and coded to enable thematic analysis, based on which conclusions regarding the aforementioned themes of discussion can be drawn.
